Playwrights: Submission Guidelines (for reading series and production) – Penguin considers scripts that have been previously unproduced in the New York metropolitan region. We are interested in good writing, unique perspectives and plays that investigate and honor the journey of the human spirit, in whatever form that takes. Submissions should meet the following guidelines:
Cast size - four or fewer.
No musicals or musical revues.
Single set or flexible set concept (strongly preferred).
Plays should be ready for production (rough drafts not encouraged).
Include: 1. A cover letter with name, address, agent (if applicable), play title, and a one-paragraph synopsis of the play; 2. The complete script (between 75 —110 pages); 3. A copy of your resume; 4. A business-size SASE or e-mail address for response (we do not return scripts).
You will receive a letter of interest or rejection – but please be patient; it can take up to a year to review your work. Mail submissions to: Literary Manager, Penguin Rep, P.O. Box 91, Stony Point, NY, 10980-0091.
Volunteers: Those who can give of their time are always welcome to help out in numerous capacities, including ushers, box office, back stage activities, office administration, etc. If you can volunteer some time, please click here.
Interns: Penguin Rep’s Internship Program (for college students) and Apprentice Program (for high school students) provides hands-on learning experiences, working with an accomplished company of professional artists, designers, technicians, and administrators during rehearsals, production, and performances. Opportunities involve many areas, including lighting/electrics, sound, scenic artistry, assistant stage manager, scenic carpentry, administration, and box office.
Internships last a minimum of six weeks to six months. Typically, interns make a commitment of at least 15 hours per week. Positions usually begin in April, June, August and September, but can be adjusted to accommodate differences in academic schedules. Apprentice schedules are more flexible. Students are encouraged to contact their schools about arranging academic credit. Internships and apprentices are unpaid, and no housing is provided, although travel stipends may be available.
To apply, please send a letter specifying your background, the dates you are available, and the area(s) you’re interesting in, along with a resume, if available, to: Internships/Apprenticeships, Penguin Rep, P.O. Box 91, Stony Point, New York 10980-0091.
Contributors: Ticket sales cover only a small portion of the cost of a season of productions. Penguin counts on contributions and grants from audience members, subscribers, government and community agencies, and all friends of the arts. Board of Trustees: Penguin Board of Trustees member responsibilities include attending the monthly meetings, participating on at least one Board Committee (fund-raising, publicity, audience development, etc.), and taking an active part in Penguin’s special events, such as our annual gala or auction. Board membership is by Board member nomination and Board vote.
